KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE PLUNGING TO LASIK EYE SURGERY The pair of eyes and its capacity to see is priceless. How much cost can you go for a perfect vision? You will never realize it until you are close to getting blind. If you simulate it by closing your eyes, thinking that being blind is pure darkness, it is overwhelming to know that the description of a person who has an acute episode is like this: “I had very severe migraine, then I saw nothing…not blackness. I can’t believe seeing NOTHING!” This is one extreme condition and if you consider millions of people who have other complex eye problems, technology takes care of the rest. A common visual problem is when there is imperfection in the shape of CORNEA (the lens of the eye) that the light cannot reach the retina properly. Cornea aids in focusing light to the retina that any problem with its function will result in blurred or distorted vision termed as refractive error. This is what happens to people who are farsighted, nearsighted and astigmatic. Up to now, the conventional, corrective way of dealing with the aberrations is to wear glasses and contact lenses. LASIK is done if you elect not to use these devices for personal convenience. LASIK EYE SURGERY is the state of the art procedure maximizing the aid of lasers to reshape the cornea, correct the vision and give back the diminished 20/20 vision. LASIK (Laser In-situ Keratomileusis) and LASEK (Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis) eye surgeries are both done for the cornea but they differ in methods. Before both can be differentiated it is best to understand the surgery procedures first. The oldest and the first laser refractive procedure is PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy),. All this laser procedures involve ablation of the cornea, literally involves removal of the lens altogether by molecular energy. Ablation with the use of laser in PRK method produces halo as a result of the wounding of the cornea. In Lasik procedure, a FLAP is created with PRK, which is clearly blending old and new methods of creating corneal flap, with a thickness of about 100 to 180 microns. No matter how small, in some cases this is sensitive enough to cause bulging. The advent of Lasik and Lasek is the aim to avoid the problems associated with that flap altogether. Initially, it is the cost that greatly affects the decision of undergoing complex procedures of lasik eye surgery. In this case, it has a price range of $500-$3000 per eye, which unfortunately, insurances would not pay for, in all cases of refractive surgery. What makes up the indefinite costing? The technology is all about the equipments used that go along with lasik evolution for the past 10 years. Every add-on to conventional methods will plummet the cost of service. Wavefront Lasik is a new customized mapping device, which will best guide the laser treatment in an accurate fashion. Another breakthrough is the computer-guided laser that replaced microkeratome blade in IntraLase method. Availing eye surgery is not readily an option for anybody. It will comprise series of assessments by an ophthalmologist, whether it is the perfect solution for you or not. Aside from that, it is costly and irreversible, which means that you are likely paying a high price for a make or break solution. Remember that laser surgery really requires understanding. Misdiagnosis of eye problem is crucial. Laser eye surgery is never applicable to degenerative macular holes of the retina, which will cause more destruction than good.
